BIOSKETCH:

Charles Addison Hickman was born June 11, 1916 in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa, where he would earn his bachelor’s, masters and doctorate degrees. After completing his PhD in 1942, he assumed a lecturing role at Iowa, where he specialized in teaching economic theory and the history of economic thought. At Iowa, he was a member of the Graduate Council, the Liberal Arts Executive Committee, and the University Library Committee.

Professor Hickman joined the University of Illinois in 1951. He was one of a new group of professors hired by Dean Howard Bowen to transform the Department of Economics into a world-class institution. However, Bowen’s new hires came under fire by the existing faculty, who were appalled by the more liberal, Keynesian form of economics they practiced. This resulted in the removal of Bowen as Dean in late 1951, and caused many of his hires to leave the University.

This included Professor Hickman, who would leave Illinois in 1953. Hickman moved to North Carolina State University that year and became the Head of their economics department. Later, he was promoted to serve as the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies there. In 1960, Hickman moved to Sothern Illinois University where he would teach until his retirement in 1980. Charles Addison Hickman was deceased on May 27, 1995, at the age of 78.
