BIOSKETCH:

Marvin Frankel came to the University of Illinois in 1952, serving a joint appointment as Assistant Professor for the Department of Economics and as Research Assistant Professor for the Bureau of Economic and Business Research.  He would complete his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1953.

Frankel’s early research primarily focused on comparisons of international productivity, which was the main topic of his first book, British and American Manufacturing Productivity. Some of his other research interests included economic growth and development, industrial organization, and environmental regulation. Of the more than 30 articles he wrote, four were featured in the American Economic Review, and many others were published in other journals like Kyklos and the Economic Journal.

In his later career, Frankel began studying the impact of aircraft noise on property values near the airports in Chicago, and published numerous monographs and reports on the subject. His success in research led him to serve as a consultant to the U.S. Agency for International Development, the International Labor Office, and the RAND Corporation. Additionally, he served as the editor of the Quarterly Review of Economics and Business for 11 years.

In addition to his academic research, Professor Frankel served extensively in department, college, and university administration.  He became the department's first director of graduate studies in 1961 and served again on this post from 1982 to 1986.  He was Associate Dean of the graduate school from 1963 to 1966.  In 1967, Professor Frankel started a four-year tenure as chairman of the Department of Economics.

At the request of the Dean of the College, Professor Frankel would return to the Bureau of Economic and Business Research as Acting Director in 1987, postponing his retirement for three years. After 38 years of devoted service to his department, college, and university, Marvin Frankel would retire in 1990.
