Biosketch:

George G. Judge was born on a farm in Carlisle, Kentucky on May 2, 1925, where he lived for the entirety of his youth. At age 18, Judge enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and flew 30 bombing missions in the Pacific Theatre during the Second World War. After the War, Judge returned to his native state and enrolled in the University of Kentucky, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics in 1948. He then earned both his master’s and doctorate degrees at Iowa State University.

Judge came to the University of Illinois in 1959, serving a joint appointment as Associate Professor of Economics and Agricultural Economics. At his arrival, he would analyze large-scale econometrics as spatial equilibrium models using the Illiac computer.  From an applied mode of research, he would go on to explore a vast range of research areas, including Markov probability models, improved inference, maximum entropy and information theory, and the quantum approach to information recovery in econometrics.

During his 27-year tenure at Illinois, Professor Judge made fundamental contributions to his chosen field of study, Econometrics.  His cutting-edge research led to the co-authorship of sixteen books, including two widely-used undergraduate and graduate econometrics textbooks, entitled, “The Theory and Practice of Econometrics,” published in 1980, and “Undergraduate Econometrics,” published in 1997.

In 1986, Judge accepted a professorship at the University of California, Berkeley. To this day, he continues his pioneering research and writings at Berkeley as an iconic leader in the field of Econometrics.
