BIOSKETCH:

Takashi Takayama was born on November 10, 1929 in Kutchan, Hokkaido, Japan. He received both his undergraduate degree and doctorate in Agricultural Economics from Hokkaido University, in 1952 and 1960 respectively. Dr. Takayama first came to the U.S. to do post-graduate work at Iowa State Univeristy in 1955, and performed post-doctoral research at Pennsylvania State University from 1961-63.

Dr. Takayama arrived at the University of Illinois as a visiting professor for the 1963-64 academic year. During his visit, he worked closely with Professor George G. Judge in the area of applying non-linear programming in spatial equilibrium models. The two made some major contributions to this area, and published some of them in the Journal of Farm Economics and Econometrica.

After his visit to Illinois, Dr. Takayama moved to the University of New England in Australia to serve as an associate professor. While in Australia, he emerged as a prolific researcher and developed into a great lecturer. Frustrated by the limited research opportunities the University of New England offered him, Dr. Takayama returned to the University of Illinois in 1968 as a full professor.

During his second stint at Illinois, Dr. Takayama quickly became known as one of the Department’s top researchers. He received multiple research grants, including one in 1975 from the Ford Foundation aimed at improving the understanding of world economic relations; there, Dr. Takayama led a research team from seven universities around the world in projecting optimal food reserve stocks.

In 1978, Dr. Takayama was appointed the head of the newly founded Economic Analysis Section of the Energy Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. There, he led a team of economists that worked closely with energy researchers to solve the various economic problems that newly developed energy systems face.

After a year of success at the Oak Ridge Lab, the Department of Energy appointed him as Director of the Office of Energy Use Analysis at the Energy Information Administration in Washington, D.C. To avoid any conflict of interest associated with his new position, Dr. Takayama resigned from his position at the University of Illinois upon his appointment.
