John Fitzgerald Due came to the University of Illinois in 1948, joining the faculty of the Department of Economics as Associate Professor. He married Illinois economist Jean Due in 1950, and was promoted to full Professor the following year.

Professor Due took his Ph.D. in 1938 at the University of California, writing his thesis on sales taxation, a new and undeveloped field. Over the next 25 years, he would become a topmost authority on the subject, an international scholar with firsthand knowledge of revenue-producing devices in many countries on four continents.

A proliferative writer, Professor Due would publish 13 books and numerous articles in the fields of taxation, transportation, economic theory and public finance. He would serve as Chairman of the Department of Economics from 1963 to 1967, and again, from 1971 to 1972.

Professor Due was awarded the Daniel Holland medal by the National Tax Association for his work in sales taxation, and was recognized by the American Economic Association for his contributions to Railway Transportation. He would retire from the university in 1973.

Dr. Due was born on July 11, 1915 and was deceased on March 4, 2009.
