BIOSKETCH:

Emanuel Thornton Weiler was born in Chicago in 1914, and moved to Elkhart, Indiana when he was six months old. In Indiana, he attended DePauw University where he earned degrees in economics and English composition in 1937. Weiler then moved to the University of Minnesota to begin his doctorate degree; there, he taught accounting and finance during the day and worked on his PhD at night.

Weiler moved to Washington, D.C. in 1941 to serve as an economic analyst to the Department of Commerce. He completed his PhD in 1942, and subsequently moved to the Federal Reserve Board to work in the banking section. When World War II ended in 1945, Dr. Weiler left the federal government, and was appointed the head of the economics department at Ohio Wesleyan University.

In 1948, Dr. Weiler accepted a position at the University of Illinois offered by Dean Howard Bowen. Weiler was part of a new group of economists Bowen had recruited to transform the Department into a world-class institution. However, these new professors held more liberal views of economics than the existing faculty, which created a rift in the department between the new and the old faculty members. This ultimately led to Bowen being dismissed as dean, causing many of his hires to leave the University.

Tensions remained in the Department after Bowen’s removal in 1951, which caused Dr. Weiler to seek a position at another university. He moved to Purdue University in 1953 with a desire to work in administration in a smaller department. There, he served as the dean of the Department of Economics and was responsible for hiring many new members to expand the department.

Dr. Weiler was given the additional role of heading the Department of Industrial Management and Transportation in 1956. This department ultimately merged with the Department of Economics to form Purdue’s School of Industrial Management, with Weiler serving as the school’s first dean. He held this role until 1969, when he was named the Krannert Distinguished Professor of Economics. Dr. Weiler retired at the end of the 1978-79 school year, and was deceased on July 1, 1979, at the age of 65.
