BIOSKETCH:

William Addison Neiswanger was born on August 30, 1900 in Topeka, Kansas. He received his bachelor’s degree from Washburn University in Topeka in 1922, and subsequently received a master’s degree from Columbia University and a doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Early in his career, Dr. Neiswanger taught economics at Dartmouth College, Wisconsin, and DePauw University.

In 1937, Dr. Neiswanger joined the University of Illinois faculty, where he would make significant contributions to the usage of statistics in economics for the next 30 years. His 1954 book entitled “Elementary Statistical Methods” became one of the most widely used textbooks on the subject in college campuses across the United States.

Dr. Neiswanger also had a fruitful career in public service while employed at the U of I. During World War II, he served as an assistant to the Office of Price Administration where he helped combat inflation caused by increased government spending on the war effort. Dr. Neiswanger also served as an economic advisor to the government of Bolivia during the war, and was a consultant to the Foreign Economic Administration.

After a successful, three-decade long stay at the University of Illinois, Dr. Neiswanger retired in 1967. He briefly served as a visiting professor at the University of Indiana after retiring. Dr. Neiswanger died on October 24, 1978, at the age of 78.
