BIOSKETCH:

Donald Renwick Hodgman was born August 16, 1921 in Buffalo, New York. He attended the University of Rochester as an undergraduate and graduated in 1942. Hodgman subsequently joined the U.S. Army to serve during World War II. After the war, Hodgman received his PhD from Harvard University, where he helped established the Russian Research Center.

Hodgman joined the University of Illinois in 1958. Much of the research he conducted during his career was on the economy of the Soviet Union, which he had developed an interest in while a student at Harvard. He later moved out of that field and focused on monetary policy and the functions of central banks. Hodgman wrote research papers for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and closely followed the creation of the European Central Bank in the 1990s.

While at the University of Illinois, Hodgman twice served as the Director of the Committee for European Studies. This committee stimulated research and teaching across multiple departments at the University: economics, political science, history, and other social sciences. Hodgman had a substantial interest in western European countries, and organized three conferences in this field. Due to his research in this area, he held the Salimbeni Chair for a time at the University of Sienna in Italy.

After teaching at the University of Illinois for 29 years, Hodgman would retire in 1987, becoming a Professor Emeritus. Donald Hodgman died on February 15, 2015, at the age of 93.
