BIOSKETCH:

John Bishop Parrish was born June 7, 1911 in Decatur. He attended the University of Illinois as an undergraduate and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1934, then completed his doctorate in 1938. During the 1940s, he served at numerous government agencies, such as on the National War Labor Board in Washington, D.C. and as regional director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Chicago.

Parrish began his teaching career in 1941 at Southern Illinois University as an assistant professor of economics. He left SIU in 1944 to work at the aforementioned government agencies. In 1947, Parrish returned to teaching by joining his alma mater, where he focused his research on labor issues and poverty. He co-authored one of the most widely used textbooks on the subject, titled “The Labor Problems of American Society”.

During his time as a professor at the University of Illinois, Parrish received a large amount of critical praise for his research. He received the Rodney D. Chip Award from the Society of Women Engineers for his work focusing on the growing role of women in the American economy, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the social sciences.

Dr. Parrish retired from the University of Illinois in 1981 and was named Professor Emeritus. He then taught as a visiting professor of business at Northeast Louisiana University from 1981 to 1982 before returning to Urbana. Parrish later served as the director for the Center of Economic Education at the University from 1984 to 1985. John Bishop Parrish was deceased on March 17, 2005 at the age of 93.
