Will I have an advisor to plan my studies?

The program has an academic advisor with an open-door policy that allows the MSPE students to drop by his office at their convenience. Students can discuss their academic questions with him, and re-optimize their program of study on a continual basis. The academic advisor also provides guidance on study plans beyond graduation and provides support in achieving them.

Why is there an advising hold on my student account?

Changes to student course registration must be cleared in advance with the program's academic advisor. After obtaining the approval of the advisor, the advising hold will be temporarily removed to allow the approved registration change to be made. This is to ensure that students can achieve their academic goals in the timeframe they have planned to stay in the program.

Where can I purchase my textbooks that will be used for my courses?

Books for the semester can be purchased at the Illini Union Bookstore. However, it is highly recommended that students wait to purchase books until after their advising appointment and registering for classes. A list of textbooks for a specific course can be found online at the bookstore.

How many courses can I take during my MSPE studies?

A minimum of 40 graduate credit hours (or 10 graduate courses each 4 credit hours) with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. However, students may take additional courses beyond the minimum requirement.

How many courses can I take in other departments on campus?

As part of the degree requirement, a student may take up to two elective graduate courses (8 hours) from a department outside of economics. These courses must be approved by the director of the MSPE Program in advance. Beyond the 10 minimum required courses, students are free to take any courses they desire.

Is there a minimum length of stay in the program?

One calendar year (fall and spring semesters plus one summer session) or three regular semesters.

Can I transfer to another program?

Yes, after completing the MSPE Program. In special circumstances, students may be allowed to transfer to another degree program at Illinois upon completing their first semester at the MSPE Program.
