Lovepreet is a PhD candidate in the Department of Economics. His research interests lie in development, labor, and economic history, with a particular focus on the determinants of regional economic growth and the role of the state in the development process. In his job market paper, he examines government-driven industrial mobilization in the U.S. North during the Civil War to investigate whether short-term government intervention that promotes manufacturing growth leads to improved long-term outcomes for local economies and individuals.
In other projects, he studies post-independence industrial policy in India (1947–present) to assess its long-run effects on regional economies.
Lovepreet has served as an assistant instructor for Economic Statistics and Econometrics in the Master's in Economics program. His research at the University of Illinois has been supported by the Paul W. Boltz Fellowship and the Harbeson Memorial Fellowship.
