In order to provide declared Economics/Econometrics/CS+Economics majors and Econ minors with courses to fulfill their degree requirements, we offer them Priority Registration. Restrictions are placed on select courses to ensure they are given first choice.

Please note: Instructors are not able to grant overrides--all override requests are managed as described below.

In Fall, the majority of seats are restricted to Freshmen and Sophomores through New Student Registration. Instructors cannot grant overrides.

  • April 7: Some unrestricted seats will be available 
  • Monday, April 21: All sections will be restricted to students with Freshman or Sophomore standing.
  • August 19-21: A limited number of emergency overrides will be granted through the 102/103 Override Request Form. Override requests will be reviewed and responses sent out by August 22. Priority will be given to graduating seniors whose programs require Econ 102 or other "emergency" situations requiring the class this term. 
  • August 25: Any unused overrides and remaining seats will be opened without restrictions.

Prerequisites of Econ 102 and Calculus I are required. 

  • Students who have credit for Econ 102 and Math 220/221/234 on their UIUC transcript meet the prerequisites for Econ 302.
  • Students who have completed the prerequisites but credit is not yet on their UIUC transcript (for example, took Math 220 elsewhere and have not yet transferred it in, or earned AP credit for Econ 102 but the score has not been submitted yet to UIUC) can email econug@illinois.edu to request an override.
    • Please attach an informal transcript, score report, or screen shot showing a passing grade or AP score. Screen shot must include student's name and final grade or score.

Restriction by Student Group

Non-majors who need access to advanced Econ courses (Econ minors and majors whose programs require advanced Econ coursework) are also granted access to advanced Econ courses. Please read below for specific date information. All restrictions are removed manually, and we are unable to guarantee an exact time the classes are available.

Students Declaring an Economics Major/Minor Please review the Declaration Criteria for our majors & minor. More information, including upcoming dates to declare and the the Curriculum Change Form, can be found here. Once you declare, you will have course access within 24 hours. 
Dual-Degrees (approved) or Triple-Majors

Please email our office (send your UIN, Name, and requested courses- using your @illinois.edu email).

We will verify that you are declared and will email you confirmation when overrides have been processed.

Please meet with an Econ Advisor often to confirm your degree requirements.

Other Students Requesting Overrides

If you do not fall under an above category, you can still request access to our restricted courses by requesting an override in August. 

ALL of the following requirements must be met to be granted an override:

  • Student must NOT be an Econ/Econometrics/CS+Econ major OR an Econ minor. These students already have access to all available seats in advanced Econ courses without the need for overrides.
  • Student must be an undergraduate. 
  • The course must have seats available. We cannot give overrides into full courses.
  • All course prerequisites must be completed. We cannot provide overrides for course prerequisites in progress or taken simultaneously.

 When requesting an override, please remember:

  • Instructors cannot provide overrides.
  • We cannot provide overrides into full courses.
  • All prerequisites must be completed. 

To request an override (requests accepted August 11-14):

  • Email econug@illinois.edu from August 11-14 from your @illinois.edu email. (Other email requests will not be accepted.)
  • Indicate the course(s) that you are requesting (no more than 2)
  • Indicate the reasons that you need access to the course(s). Indicate if you are graduating this term.

A response will be provided by August 18.
